After a tragic "accident," Wallace and Emily Parks are shot dead by a man who never showed his face. Their twin daughters, Farrah and Emma, are left orphans as they are dropped into a nightmare. They just can't seem to wake up. In and out of abusive foster homes for the next few years, they are beaten and broken when they decide no one would care if they ran. No family. No friends besides those they couldn't remember. So they did; they ran. They hadn't made it very far when they were kidnapped by a man who never showed his face. After a month of being tortured and beaten for information they didn't have, they managed to call the police. The details blur. Two cops, two girls bound in zip-ties, one man who never showed his face, and three guns. One won't make it out alive. One will be in a coma for eighteen months. Two will go missing. One will continue to be hidden in the shadows.

Juliet Price has attended Redwood High since the beginning of sophomore year, but she's never spoken to Hope, Juliet doesn't fit in with her classmates as she wasn't born rich and she didn't grow up getting everything she wanted. The Flynn family are very wealthy and very famous. Even though Juliet and Hope have never spoken, Juliet can tell that Hope is acting weird and she doesn't think it's entirely because Eleanor is dead. When the two start investigating, they realize that the truth is pointing to something dark. Almost everyone attending Redwood has secrets, and they'll do what it takes to keep them private. When the truth starts to come out, Hope is left to wonder if she remembers the dreadful night and finds out she had something to do with it, will she ever forgive herself?

Christina has had her life figured out for as long as she could remember. The plan was always to get into Harvard and become a journalist. So what if she doesn't have much of a social life? She's got friends. Even one who's pretty close. A busy social calender never fit into the plan. And a boyfriend certainly didn't. Especially with her father's strict rules. Besides there'd be plenty of time for all that later, right? Mike doesn't know what he's doing past the next week. His only plan for the future includes turning out to be nothing like his father. And possibly finding a girl who actually likes him for himself rather than for his face and social status, for a change. He's beginning to think they're all the same, though - pretty and nice to be around for a while, but pretty shallow. Mike and Christina have known each other forever but haven't been close for years. They soon start to question their priorities and why in the world they let their friendship fall apart so long ago. Can their relationship, still so young and fragile, withstand what's ahead?
