This is a story that I had to write in History based on a writing prompt. It turned into an angsty mess and I apologize for any confusion that may result from this.
The prompt was to write 1 page of a story from the point of view of either a wounded veteran returning home from the American Civil War, a planter whose plantation was destroyed, or a freed slave acquiring help from the Freedman's Bureau. I chose the first one.
Warning: blood and gore mention, early PTSD signs, combat descriptions, graphic descriptions of injuries and violence

When I was younger, I used to have such weird ideas for stories, so I thought it would be a good idea to type them all out, and just get my ideas out to the world like younger me wanted to. When the Blue Meets the Gray
America's greatest conflict. The Civil War. 1861-1865. Brother against brother, father against son. Elizabeth Hawkins is only 19 when war breaks out. She must make the biggest decision in her short life: Does she join her brother and nurse those in need, or does she live comfortably in the peace of her own home? Note: The battles and commanders are real events and people. I tried to be as accurate as possible with events of battles. Other than those, this is a completely original story. Also, the picture above is an illustration of the attack on Fort Sumter April 12, 1861; beginning of one of the bloodiest wars in American history, if not the bloodiest. Through thick and thin the Law shall prevail. A new sense of purpose awaits us, children of light, in the land where it all began. The darkness in which we once cowered in fear, now curbed by the might of our endless light. Come, brothers, come, sisters. Let there be peace among the wicked, just as the Law dictates. Peace and certainty is all that you have ever longed for, little angel. A bright, stable future. A roof without holes above thy head. Acknowledgement and recognition of thy existence, feverish dreams of grandeur. Greed born from yearning, treacherous vines of rapacity taint your innocent soul. You seek a future that does not exist. Let thy fingers hold the fragile line between dream and nightmare. Let thy light navigate the path. Shall thee give in and falter, O' land of old, envelop his body in thy unending flame of chaos. Spit out nothing but an empty husk, the remnants of a smile once so bright. Shall thee prevail, O', Great Kazdel, I ask of you, the impossible - take mercy on the innocent. Don't let the radiance dim and don't let the mind turn bleak. Wake, young traveler. Bid thy farewells and burn thy bridges. It's time to say goodbye, curly head. Cross post from AO3. It's a little story "about a young, dumb sankta who's been dealt a bad hand at life, looking for his place in all this mess. The pointless search for a better future leads him far, far away from home, to a country forever ravaged by war and misery - Kazdel, the promised land where devils roam free and peace feels out of place." War for Change
Humanity used to thrive in 2035 until a group of scientists started playing God. This science team was recruited by all the top world leaders and they've begun receiving demands for a super soldier, and they began experimenting on animals, which gave the scientists expected results, but like all experiments, there was a chance for failure. The humanoid animals, or Anthros for short, started getting smarter, faster than the scientists expected, or reacted. The Anthros broke free and took what was left of the 'White Mist,' the substance that created them, and put it into the planet's air supply. Long story short, most animals worldwide have begun transforming into Anthros, and started devastating the world's militaries before attacking cities. Humanity is now facing extinction with their last millions while the Anthro civilization is over 2 Billion strong and counting. The war between Humans and Anthros has lasted for over 50 years, and while humans may be disadvantaged against the Anthros higher strength, speed, endurance, and intelligence, they still beat Anthros with improvisation, adaptability, and tactics. The war has destroyed all four Eastern continents, leaving behind a creature both Humans and Anthros call Reapers, who are husks of the person they were. The Anthros have near complete control over North America and are fighting Humanity in South America, but the main human bases are located on the Hawaiian islands. With death seeming inevitable for human kind, can nothing stop humanity from extinction? Zero has just graduated from high school with good marks and a scholarship. His family wanted to celebrate, so they said they would wait for him. He went back to grab his wallet, and as he turned around, he started falling in a wormhole, closing afterwards. He woke up in a hospital, doesn't know why he's there, doesn't know who he is, doesn't even know how he got there, and he's got a real bad headache. He's got a head wound the size of a baseball, he can't see with his right eye, and no matter how hard he tries, he can't get a straight answer for anything, except that mineshaft workers found him crystalized and immediately flew him to the 'hospital.' Nobody could figure out how long he was in the crystal, and the only thing he could remember was his name. I really hope you enjoy! Like my previous books, I haven't gotten a cover for it but I'm working on it:)
Reasons
Cursed as much as blessed with empathy, Ava Monroe can't help herself when someone needs help, physically or mentally. Her escape from the horrors of people's minds is painting, but painting is exactly what leads her to Max. To be fair, she doesn't know who Max is when she meets him. She is drawn to his tortured soul, like a moth to a flame, and it just might be her undoing. However, Max isn't as willing as her brother was to get help with his PTSS, and his missing leg is a physical reminder to him of the horror in his mind and memory. He is ready to call it quits, but finds someone won't let him, someone who is willing to help him fight his battles. Ava doesn't care how dark and ugly it can get, and she is too stubborn to give up. Can Ava help Max find a reason to live? Or will his tortured soul drag her down with him? *Warning: This story might contain sensitive material.
