ACL Injury - Why is ACL surgery necessary..?

Anterior Cruciate Ligament or ACL is a primary ligament present in the knee joint. Not only it allows the normal movement and mechanics of the knee but ensures the functionality as well.
If the ligament is torn, then there is a significant drop in the proper working of the knee. What are the symptoms?

• Constant pain around the knee joint
• Swelling in the knee
• Instability
• Buckling sensation or giving out of the knee
An ACL injury is categorized into two types; complete and partial. Usually, surgical intervention is recommended in case of a complete tear. It is because of the significant operative as well as rehabilitation risks involved in it.

How do the doctors repair a torn ACL? Amongst the four major ligaments of the knee, the anterior cruciate ligament attaches the shin bone and thigh bone, the tibia to the femur.
It maintains the stability of the knee and keeps the tibia from sliding too far in the forward direction.

A typical ligament injury is called a sprain. When there is a fall or a sudden change in the running direction or an incorrect landing during a jump; there is a possibility of having a sprain in the ligament.
The grading of the ACL sprain is done based on how much the ligament has damaged.
 A minor stretching to the ligament where the knee is reasonably stable is called Grade 1 sprain.
 A Partial tear and loose and damaged ligament due to exceptional ligament stretch are called Grade 2 sprain. However, grade 2 sprains are relatively rare.
 In case of a complete tear of the ACL, the knee joint becomes unstable and to correct the problem surgery becomes almost inevitable.

If the knee is stable, then non-surgical methods can be tried. If the knee is significantly unstable, then surgery is inevitable.
