SAO:R is a creative fan story like no other, about a new set of experiments Rath is performing with the fluctlight technology. A few "instances" of digital history have been recreated from Kirito's fluctlight data and the data of other people who have dived into the Underworld or lived in it, and they have created artificial alternate universes in the same style as the Underworld itself. One of these instances' Kirito has died unexpectedly, and Kikuoka calls in the REAL Kirito to fill in and continue where his other self left off. Unfortunately, things get complicated as usual.
