Grayson Alexander Swan was born with a gift, but some might consider it a curse. Grayson can see ghosts, and he inherited that gift from his maternal Grandmother, Marie Higginbotham. When Grayson was a little boy, he befriended an evil spirit, but Marie saved him when she heard the malicious ghost telling her grandson to jump off of a cliff so that it can possess his body. Marie warned Grayson of the dangers of his powers. When Marie passed away due to old age, her last words to Grayson was to be careful.

Grayson felt alone once his Grandmother passed away since she was the only one that understands him. After Marie's death, Grayson felt like something was wrong with him since his older twin sister, Isabella Marie Swan would make fun of him by calling him names such as Freak, Weirdo, and Loser because she always sees Grayson talking to himself.

As Grayson got older, he made sure to be careful when using his gift because Grayson was afraid that when he befriends people, they will shun him if they knew what he could do.

When Grayson's Mother, Renee remarried a minor-league baseball player named Phil Dwyer, Grayson and his sister decided to move in with their Father, Charlie Swan at Forks, Washington so that their Mother could travel the states with Phil.
