With Endgame out I would like to share the reason why seeing Tony meet his end broke my heart along with the rest of the fan base.

"I was conceived during a one night stand." 6 months after the Battle of New York, Tony Stark has spent all his rime building dozens of new powered suits, trinkets and gadgets, mostly for Emma Stark, because he is paranoid that she'd be kidnapped again. It was clear that the events of New York had left Tony with severe PTSD and anxiety, but the events didn't effect Emma as much anymore because she had Pepper Potts to help her. But it seemed that no matter how much she helped him, Pepper wasn't able to get through to Tony. Not helping their problems, a new threat came to be; a powerful terrorist leader named the Mandarin has been responsible for multiple bombings. Tony fears that Pepper might leave him and take Emma with her because she's had enough, especially when she gets visited by an old interest, Killian. After Happy Hogan was severely injured by one of the bombings, an angry Tony gave a threatening promise to Mandarin on the news, which later caused a terrorist attack on Tony's own house, with Pepper and Emma inside. Everyone was left thinking Tony was dead, but he left Pepper and Emma a message, telling them he was alive. My Light Diminishes. A Tony Stark x Reader
Tony Stark and the reader have been best friends since before College, from there they started dating to eventually became married. However, their marriage faces complications when Tony starts coming home late at night, and becoming distant, leaving the reader feeling alone and hurt. *This is not completely canon, since Tony didn't reveal to the public that he was Ironman until Ironman 2, which is set in 2011 (roughly) And he knew Bruce before meeting him during the Avengers. Also, I love Tony Stark, I doubt he would treat his wife/partner like this by keeping secrets. But oh well. Enjoy! I started writing this fan fiction story after watching Thor Ragnarok, so the events described here happen before Infinity War and End Game. Actually, the assumption is that in my story events from Infinity War and End Game never take place - let's say that it's a parallel universe (or a separate timeline - which is possible as we now know). Thor and Loki reach Earth - as they planned in the ending scene of Ragnarok - and start cooperating with the Avengers. Stark and Rogers, still not on best terms after Civil War, are forced to work together. Banner is happy to be back to work in the Avengers lab, but still keeping his distance from Natasha. This story is however not as much about the Avengers, but more about an ordinary person being forced into their world by a turn of events.Complete
