Gwenyth Clifton's just another faceless engineer at Tritonics inc. until a mysterious object is found in the wreckage of a long-since-crashed spaceship in the Western Desert, Egypt by Tritonics inc. Asked to personally examine the object herself as a test of eligibility for a promotion, Gwen doesn't expect it to literally explode in her face.

After a rush to S.H.I.E.L.D. medical facilities and several unsuccessful surgeries, Gwen has to learn to cope with irreversible damage to her eyes, face, and hands under the guidance of Doctor Stephen Strange who is asked to keep an eye on her at his sanctum sanctorum. But while in the midst of her dark and hopeless situation, she begins having flashes of sight--but of a black-and-white world where the true nature of her surroundings is revealed--and she realizes nothing is as it seems.
