21 décembre 1911, à 12 h 45, un navire norvégien, le Carl Bech, fait naufrage sur les côtes de Bretagne, avec seize marins à bord, lors d'une effroyable tempête. 70 ans après, jour pour jour, le 21 décembre 1981, à 12 h 45, Lucy, 12 ans, se tue lors d'un accident de vélo, dans un petit village du Jura. Quel rapport entre ces deux événements ? Apparemment aucun, à part la date et l'heure, similaires à la minute près.
Jean, le père de Lucy, pleure inlassablement la mort de son enfant. Sa vie est fichue, comme figée dans le temps. Dans de violents cauchemars, il est hanté par le visage d'un inconnu, qui semble aspiré par une entité monstrueuse. 
Puis un jour, semblant venir de nulle part, une femme à la beauté surnaturelle entre dans sa vie et lui fait entrevoir l'indicible, par signes... Alors que Jean a vu de ses yeux la vie s'échapper du corps de son enfant, une question s'impose à lui : Lucy est-elle en vie ? Croyant devenir fou, il va cependant tout quitter et se mettre en quête de la vérité, guidé par la mystérieuse inconnue.
