When the Vampires almost became extinct, my city worried. Who would be there to protect us if one day the Vampires were gone? What would we do? We couldn't survive. We, the puny little humans with myriad weaknesses, were nothing compared to what could have killed a Vampire. No we needed protection, and the Councils came up with such protection. Now five people are to be Chosen every month to become Vampires; and who should be the fifth one?

Every year, my town chooses a sacrifice for the demon that "watches over" our home. In exchange for a person from the village between the ages of 17 to 25, the demon protects our village. And because of that pact, our village is protected for the next year, under the demon's watchful eyes. No one knows what happens to those who the demon chooses, but there's a lot of theories about it. One is that the demon eats or absorbs those who are chosen - another, that it kills them. But this year, I'm the one who's chosen. I get to meet the demon I've feared since I was a child, and now that I'm 24, and am considered an adult, I could have left the village behind. But I didn't. Something inside me told me to stay. Now, I'm going to die. I just know it. I can't leave now, or run away, because the town would be unprotected for a whole year, and that's where my family lives. I don't know what to do, but I'm sure I'll think of something. Besides, how bad can this demon be if they're guarding our town?

For the most part other creatures kept to their own realms apart from raids by Goblins and Fairies working as strippers. I had left the Army and was working as a Private Eye. A low rent flat come office and largely low rent clients but it suited me. Then one day a Vampire came through the door. A beautiful Vampire who needed my help She liked dogs and wore bright purple DMs and was called Sam. Plus she was related to the most powerful Vampire in the world whose daughter had been kidnapped. Soon I found that many children had been taken, Human, Vampire, Werewolf and Elf. Never any ransom, the children simply disappeared. So I searched with Sam - niece of the Master Vampire, Sean Strathearn - a friend from the SAS, Fanny - a Faery stripper and of course Gizmo - a very special dog. We travelled realms, fought with Dragons and found Mabel - probably the most evil person I have ever met.

Not a vampire or any of that rubbish. Though they do exist. I watched everyone I loved in the time of their dying, knowing I couldn't follow them. Four hundred years later, I'm alive. And feast on the souls that no one uses, as they had before. In sacrificing one life for another, I pray every day, that my past in some way doesn't come back to me. But I was wrong.
