Being over come with fear and anxiety, Adeline pushed her short, little legs as quickly as they could move. All through the cold, dark night she endlessly ran, but she kept seeing the same tree patterns. Thinking to herself, Adeline wondered how long she had been running in circles, and why was she running? What was she running from? Those questions were quickly answered when she found herself at a dead end. Being stuck at a giant rock, Adeline slowed down her quick breaths. Silence overcame her sensitive ears, but in a split second her ears picked up something. The crunching of leaves broke the peaceful silence, and heavy steps filled her little ears. The noises of the footsteps became louder as it became closer. A creature revealed itself as it slid out of the rough brush. Suddenly her surroundings slowly turned hues of dark purples, grays, and blacks as the creature moved its body close to hers. Adeline could not describe the beast's disgusting grin, nor could she describe the beast's ugliness. All she knew is that the monster sent chills down her spine.

We knew something wasn't right from the moment we awoke. It was like something was missing - a part of our very souls - and we couldn't sense the deficiency, no matter how hard we tried. A hundred million eyes adjusted to the dark all at once, all surprised to be awakened so soon. We ran through our checklists of limbs and senses, drawing ourselves out of our dreams piece by piece. Some went back to sleep, unaware, unbothered, too tired to notice the difference. Some lay in bed, too anxious to stand until the light of dawn crept through their windows at last, and they were sure the monsters in their closets had gone back to sleep. Some leapt from their slumbers, more keenly aware than others that the missing pieces were important. But we didn't know. We couldn't have. Not until we found ourselves standing in the light and discovered: We no longer had shadows.
