Low-income communities in the Bay Area often suffer from lack of educational opportunities. Due to these barriers being set up in low-income communities like Oakland, CA, many students aren't fully motivated to go to college or to do a post-secondary career. Students tend to stop being academically-oriented due to lack of monetary resources or because of the dissenting culture these students have to experience on a daily basis. These students start to lose hope in a post-secondary education because no one around them are there to help motivate them.
I decided to interview my fellow friend, Yvette Peña, who is a senior at my school Aspire Lionel Wilson College Preparatory Academy. Since I met Yvette in 9th grade, she has always been an academically motivated student. She likes to be involved in after-school programs like SLAM(poetry club) and Ignite(girl empowerment club), and doesn't feel discouraged when called a "tryhard" or a "teacher's pet". She's truly a role model for the school who values education and wants the best for her and for everyone at the school. Yvette will be graduating this spring from my school and I wish her the best at UC Davis this fall.
