This is (or should be) the mostly men main cast version. There's also a mostly women main cast version. Throughout this series, six characters develop their powers and their relationships with friends, with siblings and with romantic and sexual partners. They travel through time and to alternate dimensions both by accident due to a lack of control over their powers and intentionally due to being summoned to help save their world or a time line. The series is light and the individual novellas can be read on their own in terms of the story itself. In North America, Variant users are studied by a government group known as the CPI, whose goal is to uncover the mysteries of their biological differences. In this world exists Rachel Livia, a young woman who was destined for a chance at freedom after being held captive by the CPI her entire life. She is taken in by a group known as NOA, whose goal is to discredit and uproot the CPI. As she works alongside them to take them down, she comes to discover the truths about herself and the world that surrounds her, finding out that maybe it isn't all what she thought it to be. Obsidian successfully plays the game expected of her, passes the tests, and is accepted as a Guardian. Though she jumps through the hoops, she doesn't want to follow the precepts at all, to guard the portals but never open them. She believes its a waste to not explore the worlds within, like her ancestors had. How can they protect themselves if something comes through the portals if they don't know what's in them? Obsidian's appointed mentor, Damian, is a straight-laced young Guardian, who can't contain the young dedicant. He's always believed the laws are in place to protect all of Nect, but Obsidian starts to make him question his own principles. She doesn't allow him any time to examine the possibilities, though, and he has to decide between reporting her or standing by her side to protect her from whatever horrors she stirs up.
