Kaede lived during the early years of the Edo period, before dying a brutal death at the hands of a serial killer. After witnessing the best and worst of humanity over 400 years, Kaede has only hope for the future of humanity while he is losing hope for his own opportunity to be at rest. His life's wish, to be loved by someone with a beating heart, has gone unfulfilled for centuries. Older spirits shun him, as do younger ones. There is no longer any place for him in the spirit realm, much less the living world -- until he meets Okazaki Yuuichiro. Yuu is the only living person who has ever been willing to speak with him for more than a few minutes, and the minutes turn into hours, then days and weeks. In an unforeseen twist of fate, Yuu may be Kaede's last hope for achieving eternal peace.
