Minnesota is cold and rainy almost all the time and Paz is just counting down the days until she can escape into the wilderness or the big city and away from her drunk of a father.
A girl at Paz's school, Artemis, tells her that if she ever wanted to actually leave, she'd pick her up right away. So when her father finds out that Paz is into girls, she runs.
Artemis keeps her promise, picking her and her cat, Gladys, up and leaving for Paz's runway mother's house in southern Cali.
Though sad, and happy, and cold, and hot times, Paz is only sure of one thing.
She never wants to end this drive home.
