River Thomas is a sixteen-year old, carefree girl. She spends her time visiting the beach next to her home and going to late-night parties, but that all changes when her house burns down with her family inside. After she goes to live with her aunt in Kentucky, River wants to forget everything about her life before, but she can't. Not when she thinks she might have the power to control fire. Not when she meets a cryptic, schizophrenic boy who tells her there's something wrong with her. Not when she doesn't even remember the night her house burned down. As River tries to unravel the events that led to her family's death, the line between fantasy and reality fades.

River has spent her entire life trying to find who she truly is in this world and has always wanted to know the reasons behind the visions she has seen her entire life of a girl she never met. She lives through them in episodes as if they are actually happening when in fact, it's not her life traumas that she sees. Her family thinks she's psychotic but the doctor's say she's perfectly sane. What a conundrum to be in.
