300 people survive an nuclear based disaster causing Earth to be deadly in 2019. A tribe of 60 people who have learn and adapted to the radiation and thus have powers from that. The rest live in bunkers underground.  300 years pass and both populations have grown. There are roughly 500,000 people who live under ground and 169,000 people in 13 clans of the original tribe. One day a 17 year old girl, Wryn Berkely, is banished from the bunkers because she stole a bunch  of bread so that she and a group of other homeless children wouldn't starve. In the bunkers every crime is punishable by banishment to the upper world, which in most cases means death. The leader of all the clans, Zhenya, finds her freezing in the woods and takes her in. Slowly Zhenya falls in love with the Wryn.
