Before the Convergence... Before the Avatar was chosen... before Xirxine ventured beyond Safe Haven's borders... there was a legend. It told of a glorious battle between a phoenix and a dragon, a days-long war for the fate of Safe Haven. In its most basic summary, the dragon appeared out of nowhere, took over the hidden world, and was ultimately disintegrated by the phoenix after their battle. So the story says.
