This book is the journal of a young Ivan Hall growing up in the south of the U.S. (most of it takes place in Tennessee and Arkansas) around the end of the nineteenth century. It isn't particularly exciting, but instead paints a rather peaceful picture of an area that was, about two generations before, ravaged by civil war and would soon to be drawn into world war.
There are bits about school, the geography of the area, nature, hunting and trapping various game, steamboats, farming, fishing, folklore, and so on.
