20 minutes east of the sprawling desert ghetto of Astro City, New Mexico, La Cabra Road runs parallel to the interstate and passes through the truck stop town of Mission Hill, with the high plains on one side and mountain forest on the other. When a long haired bearded stranger blows through town, a few would swear the surly drifter was a former resident although he hasn't aged a day since he vanished decades ago. At the historic Union Hotel in the mountains, guests speculate over bright blue flashes that could be lightning if they didn't ignite the shadows down among the trees during the night, rather than being in the sky. They have more to wonder about in the unmistakable sound of wolves howling from the wilderness for the first time in the area in over a century. Cell phones die, lights flicker, and cars stall, as Mission Hill suffers a spate of lethal animal attacks. Some of the blood thirsty creatures, all with blue light glowing from their eyes and mouths, have been extinct in the wild for over a hundred years, and the attacks steadily escalate in number.
