A mysterious Servant has destroyed part of the Moon, causing a fragment of the Moon Cell to fall down to Earth. Due to the fragment of the Moon Cell colliding with Fuyuki's Greater Grail and shattering both into pieces, the Grail War System has begun to individually manifest all around the world in the form of Class Containers. Class Containers are manifestations of the concept of a "Class" - the container that Heroic Spirits from the Throne of Heroes are summoned into in order to become Servants.

To keep their true names hidden, the seven Servants are sorted into one of seven Classes: Saber, Archer, Lancer, Rider, Caster, Berserker, and Assassin. In addition, each Servant is armed with the mysteries that symbolize their legend — Noble Phantasms, legendary armaments and abilities, the very concepts that embody their fame. As each Servant falls, the Holy Grail receives their power, until only one remains and the Grail is able to manifest in the physical world to grant the winners' wishes.
