Before the kingdom was united a long time ago, there were seven kings and seven kingdoms, all of who did their best to appear more powerful than their neighbours. The land was at constant war, with a woman being used as gold to trade for armies and weapons. A curse is placed upon all seven kingdoms. A curse that sentences all kings to death one hundred days after being crowned, and those who choose not to wear the crown face a life of suffering, loss and madness. 

After the King of Wessex dies, his son sells his sister Matilda in exchange for gold and a peace treaty to the King of Mercia. However, one hundred days after her brother is crowned, both her brother and her new husband die, as do the other seven kings. With two childless kings now on the ground, the war of the kingdoms turns their weapons on Matilda and her unborn child, but the Kings have a lot more than they bargained for when it comes to Queen Matilda.
