Lucetta was born attached to four spirits , They follow her. 
they guide her, help her and protect her. But the spirits also let give  her inner sight. 
she sees feelings as color, She sees peoples deepest thoughts and desires.  she can see what people wan't no matter the feeling, Sadness, hate, love.
She hears them sometimes also the words hit her in a cloud of smoke and a loud horrid scream. 
The spirits show her conversations that she might need to hear.
to everyone else besides her mother and brother, Lucetta is a college student with sensory issues who has regular breakdowns when exposed to alot of 'noise'.  To her shes being smothered by everyone's feelings and she sucks them in like a dry sponge and her body reacts in intense panic attacks.  Lucetta has always felt as she was cursed , outcasted and insane..  but soon realizes she can use her gift for good.

It's been five years since the plague struck. Leah knows there are other survivors, but she's avoiding them. She is doing just fine on her own. Surviving after everyone she knew died has made her physically strong and honed her intelligence, but she is emotionally devastated.
