Mark is a normal 14 year old boy living in normal Manhattan, New York. Then one day his mother is diagnosed with an unknown and seemingly incurable disease, leaving the doctors dumbfounded at where this mysterious disease came from. It attacks the central nervous system, causing spasms and random infiltrations of the brain. His mother is doing impossible feats without her even knowing it. Mark is devastated when he hears. What did he ever do to deserve this? Why him? He is even more upset when he discovers the disease is contagious and starts to spread. Soon the whole city of Manhattan is diagnosed and is quarrantined from the rest of the world. Except for Mark. He is immune, and along with two other boys and a girl named Sarah, he and his group set out to find out what started this outbreak, and how to stop it. But what they discover is even more insane than the disease outbreak itself.

The dead do not sleep. The dead do not eat. The dead most certainly do not laugh. And the dead do not cry. 6 years have passed since nuclear war broke out, destroying the planet and killing most of the world's population. Those who are immune form The Society and go on the run in hopes to find a hiding place away from the rest of the world. Ghost, an immune, escapes from The Shelters and runs into Frostbite, an infected teenager. Ghost believes that his father, head researcher of the LeVon Institute, was close to finding a cure but is murdered before he does.
