Eric has been bored lately. He used to be so full of enthusiasm for his career as a software engineer. Lately though, he feels like his life is just one endless rerun of an old TV show. That is until he has some trouble with a bug in a program he was working on a patch for. The previous developer left a comment in a function that doesn't seem to be called anywhere in the code. It contains a web link. Curious, Eric pastes the link into his browser only to get a "page not found" error. The next morning when Eric comes into work he finds his computer is running an entirely different operating system. Raven OS. Everything seems a bit disorganized and out of place. But there's more to this Operating System than meets his spectacles.

But that's the least of Hoseok's problems. While on the Moon, he discovers something. Something that humanity could never see even in their worst nightmares. Will Hoseok survive and make it home, or will be succumb to the same fate as the rest of his crew? Rated M for swearing and some gore/violence, but nothing extreme. No sexual content. During the filming of "Star Trek: The Next Generation", there would frequently come times when the story called for the characters (and in the early days, it was often that bane of Trekkies everywhere, Wesley Crusher, the Platonic Ideal of Dork) to fix some far-future technical problem. Which means said characters had to employ far-future tech. Which by definition hasn't been invented yet. What happened over the course of the series was that they engaged a couple of people to be in charge of continuity and technology, and the script writers would insert into the scripts, "[technobabble here]", leaving the staff TechGeek to insert the proper futuristic-sounding tech gibberish. You know: Stuff that sounds realistically scientific, but is really just verbal handwaving. "Tachyon fields"; "Inertial dampers"; and so on. Welcome to my non-fictional, non-Star Trek, highly-idiosyncratic take on tech, tech-related topics, and sometimes random stuff that's just obliquely related to tech that was triggered by me reading or hearing or seeing something that happened to drift through the wide-open transom of my brain and get stuck there. Some of the items you will see here are funny, some I hope are thought-provoking, some could probably be filed under the hashtag of #DougRant, filtered through what my life-partner calls my "weird perspective". If you enjoy reading them, then they will have served their purpose. So read on and, hopefully, enjoy!Complete

"I think I'm gay." I say, leaving out the part about my... exposing dream about him last night. I watched his expression, waiting for some sign that he was angry. I waited for him to call me a faggot, to curse me off and tell me he never wanted to see me again. Instead, I was greeted with his perfect toothy smile. "That's great man, I'm of proud you." He says, patting my arm as he stuffed another cracker in his mouth. "It takes some real balls to come out to someone." He says, his beautiful green eyes blazing into mine. I felt myself become flustered at his gaze. "Uh, Yeah, Thanks." I stumbled out, "You're not mad?" I ask. His expression turns to hurt as he crinkles his eyebrows. "Why the hell would I be mad?" He asks, hesitating on the crackers and pushing them away. "I just thought-it's just- well... you just always seem so pissed when someone mentions the word gay." I spit out words, scared for his reaction. He sighs, "That doesn't fucking mean I hate gays. Normally when I do that it's because someone's using the word 'gay' to hate on them, it just pisses me off, you know?" He asks, bringing the crackers back into his lap and biting into them. "Plus-" He adds on, "You're my best friend, if anything, you being gay is a blessing. I'll always support you." He says, glancing at me through the side of his eyes. I look away, towards the door to hide the crimson blush that I feel spread over my face. "Thanks." I all but squeak out. And that's the day I realized, I have a faint crush on my best friend. <><><><><< THIS BOOK IS BEING *MAJORLY* EDITED. You are home alone, and you hear on the news about the profile of a murderer who is on the loose. You look out the sliding glass doors to your backyard, and you notice a man standing out in the snow. He fits the profile of the murderer exactly, and he is smiling at you. You gulp, picking up the phone to your right dialing 911. You look back out the glass as you press the phone to your ear, and notice he is much closer to you now. You then drop the phone in shock. There are no footprints in the snow... It's his reflection. Wizards, vampires, fairies, and their supernatural peers have always had trouble with modern technology. Alex Norton is the guy they turn to for computers and phones that won't explode in their hands. Paranormal tech support is frustrating when your clients are centuries older than your grandparents and can light you on fire with a thought, but at least the pay is good. When Alex's best friend and former partner dies unexpectedly, he's left with plenty inherit. There's a house, a pile of old gadgets, and plenty of books. Oh, and a niece he's never met, who he has to take as an apprentice and serve as her guide to the world of the Weird. Note: This is a first manuscript, and the first completed draft at that.
