Als ich vor 5 Jahren von zuhause weck ging, um ein großes Geheimnis zu bewahren wusste ich nicht was auf mich zukommen wird. Aber ich habe meine Entscheidung damals für richtig empfunden. Ich bin auch jetzt noch der Überzeugung das sie richtig war. The house next door goes up for sale, the dreaded day arrives in which its been sold and now the only thing left is to find out whose moving in. "Good news hunny the new neighbours are moving in today and I've invited them around for dinner" my mum said excitedly. "And I'm supposed to be excited because...." if my tone doesn't give it away, I'm not excited for new neighbours, my best friend lived in that house but after a tragic accident that took her life her parents decided to up and sell. "I appreciate that its hard but the Hunts are a lovely family and they have children one is slightly older than you and the other is a few months younger, and I suggest you play nice" my mum warned. "Are you joking me mum! no matter who moves in next door nothing will change, Lily is dead and no matter how friendly you are to the Hunts they will never replace Lily!" I shouted getting more and more angry as I vented. A thumb swiftly wiped the tear from my cheek that I hadn't even realised had fell, it was my dad. "Oh baby girl don't cry, it will all be okay, we don't want you to replace Lily but we do want you to be civil at least because what happened was not your fault or the Hunts okay" my dad cooed as he soothed me and sent me upstairs to get ready for the welcoming dinner.

My neighbour's house is normal. There are two stories, stairs, and a tiny porch. A red door, and many windows with pretty crimson shutters. My neighbour's house is normal. The lights are on when they need to be, and off when they don't. The grass is mown, and there are sometimes cars in the driveway. My neighbour's house is normal. Sometimes I can see into some of the rooms. Always when I'm not really trying. The rooms are nice, with a warm colour scheme and polished wooden furniture. There is one room that is entirely white. A bare bulb swings from the ceiling. From the outside, I can see no furniture. The walls are old and stained.. There are no shutters on that window. My neighbour's house is normal. I see them sometimes. They're gone most of the day. We wave when we see each other, coming or going. Those two seem nice. Didn't they used to have a son about my age? My neighbour's house is normal. They turn off their lights about the same time we do. Except in that one room. The lights in the white room stay on late each night. I tried to watch them, once, to see how late they stayed on. I fell asleep. When I woke up, they were already off. My neighbour's house is normal. Sometimes I hear sounds from the house. Almost like muffled screams. Everyone gets night terrors, it's common knowledge that, at night, everything can sound scary. My neighbour's house is normal. Except when it isn't.

"All ready?" My mom says cheerfully "Because you look ready to go." "All ready." I say before I look out the window. She starts up the truck and heads out of the driveway. Some time through the drive my mom starts small talk. "So, how are you?" She asks politely "Was it decent? Okay?" "It was" I kind of think it over before continuing "It was... Not the place for me. Kind of like trying to put the square block in the triangle hole. I didn't fit in. Always being yelled at, I suppose." "I see" My mom begins "I am sorry for not talking more to you. Life has been busy. But I am glad to see you making a change for the better. If that is or was in your mind." I just nod. "My life wasn't fair there." I open up about what has been happening. "It was always about my step siblings or step mom. Always expecting me to be there, when they weren't there for me. Being expected to drop everything even if they knew several months in advance. My step mom wasn't the parent I needed. And my dad didn't step in to stop it." My mom sighs, just nodding as she listens. I know I should have chosen to live with her. But all those years ago my dad wasn't dating anyone. But to be honest neither was my mom. I feel bad now choosing dad over her. As I look out the window, my eyes feel heavy, and before I even know it I'm asleep.

Pages filled with thoughts I wouldn't dare say out loud. The weird, random moments that stuck with me, the people I noticed but pretended I didn't. The way I felt about things I acted indifferent to. It was all there, inked into the pages like a conversation with myself. No one would ever read it. No one would ever know the things I thought about, the things I laughed at, the things that made me roll my eyes at myself. Like how I let my gaze linger too long on that boy before groaning at my own damn self. Or how I swore I didn't care about people, but some part of me still held onto the memories of them anyway. My journal didn't judge. It just took everything in, let me spill it all out without making it a big deal. Without making me a big deal. So I wrote. Scribbled fast, let my thoughts spill onto the paper. Then I closed it, held it close for a second-like I always did-before tucking it away again. Out of sight, but never really out of mind.
