One more jump, then it's all over. I pat Whispers dappled neck, preparing myself for that final jump. It's coming closer to us and we canter towards it. A double oxer, about 80cm high. Whispers hoofbeats are heavy in my ears, the rest of the crowd drowned out. It's only me, Whisper and that final jump, I think to myself. I can do this. I ready myself for take off. Whisper nickers slightly, then she lifts her front hooves off the ground. I move myself into two-point as her neck moves towards my body.
Within moments, everything comes crashing down. The last thing I can remember is falling off before the darkness. Then Whisper neighing loudly in pain.. And finally.. Silence. Nothing but a black, silent world.
