Gwen Whitlock is an average twelve-year-old Canadian girl, with a big interest in red pandas. She knows everything about them, from their scientific names to their cultural depictions. She helps care for the red pandas in the city zoo, and is extremely helpful when a mother gives birth to three cubs, but only one survives the first night. Gwen devotes her entire summer to taking care of the sick cub, but will it be enough? The red panda may be too sick to save, but despite all the people telling Gwen to give up, she continues trying to keep the cub alive. With Gwen's determination and the help of her neighbour, thirteen-year-old Mark Fettle, they may be able to pull through for the red pandas.
