Emily Herondale was found by Brother Zachariah and warlock Theresa Gray by her mother's dead body. Her twin, Jonathan, had already been taken away.
Tessa adopted the child and raised her in London for five years, before a war between English warlocks broke out and it was no longer safe for a Shadowhunter. Emily was sent to New York to live with another warlock, Magnus Bane, where she met three other Shadowhunters her own age.
