How on Earth does death lead to love?

Ash Ketchum, in his home town of Pallet, whether  you knew him or not, you hate him. All the locals hated him for just existing. He is abused regularly on a daily basis, but overall tolerated it well, never seeming to break. 

The only people who care for him are his family and Professor Oak.

But what happens when something happens that's so dramatic, that it sends Ash away from Pallet and finally reconnect with someone that he was separated from years prior.
