Nicolai James Cullen - 21, gay, lived in the foster care system from the ages of 7 through 18, when he aged out of the system, and was moved into apartments for foster kids who aged out of the system without being adopted. He still lives in this apartment, and keeps to himself while at home, or at his job at the local grocery store. His mama passed away to a complication in surgery when he was 7, his dad's been M.I.A. since he was 2, and doesn't have any known family, so he hasn't celebrated Christmas in 14 years. Meets a man in an expensive suit that comes into the store one day while Nicolai is cashiering. Nicolai feels small and inadequate compared to the man - like he shouldn't be breathing the same air as the man in front of him, let alone look at him. Every time the man returns to the store, if Nicolai is cashiering, the man waits in his line, no matter how long he has to wait.
