Everyone you know as of now could be gone. One scientific mishap and thus zombies became real life things. Tyler Fulekin thought that zombies were just in video games, until his parents became zombified. Ever since then, humanity as he knew it went on a downward spiral. The population of the United States by itself has already gone down by almost half, let alone all of Florida. Tampa is a ghost town. Few actual humans live there, since it's been months after the accident. Food and water has become more scarce, and the air's condition is potentially uninhabitable for humans, if it keeps this up. Who knew that one chemical mixture, one chemical change, could make such a disaster in a split second. Tyler definitely didn't.
As all his friends at school die off and become zombies, Tyler has become a shell of his former self. He never talks to anyone, he doesn't even play any video games anymore. The school itself has shut down. Not voluntarily, but because the whole staff has been taken. Only a few people remain not infected by the terrible disease Tyler likes to call "Pre-Death". Those few people all gather up, and with what resources they have, they survive, and somehow try to prevent the disease at its epicenter.
Note: I'm gonna try to keep it less mature, but since it's, ya know, a zombie apocalypse, they're has to be some violence. I'm keeping a low on the romance, because that's hellish in this kind of story.
In the future, everyone who's bitten by a zombie turns into one... until Diane doesn't. Seven days later, she's facing consequences she never imagined.
* * * * *
As civilization collapses under a relentless wave of zombies, Diane and her friends take shelter in a military base. However, while she's rescuing another survivor, Diane gets bitten by one of the monsters. She hides it and runs away, knowing she only has days left to live.
But she soon discovers she isn't turning into a zombie - she's turning into something else.

Excerpt:
I looked up and stared. My reflection looked back at me in the mirror of the dark room. My eyes were literally glowing, there was no mistaking it. It was not a reflection of light, or any of the other excuses I had used or others had assumed. They were glowing a light sapphire blue color. It was not a bright glow, but it was definitely a glow.
Glowing eyes were not normal.
Okay, at this point I had to admit it, I was no longer normal.
What was I then? For that, I had no answer
