Celeste's mother, brothers, and sisters all died in a fire that was a result of a fight with her abusive father when visiting home from college, where he threw his bottle of vodka into the lit fireplace, causing it to spread beyond its controlled environment.

The story takes place about a week after the fire.

Ciel Phantomhive offered Celeste room and board at his manor, as long as she worked for him as a maid. Knowing she needed a place to stay until she could find a way back home, Celeste accepted the offer. Taking up residence with Ciel at the Phantomhive manor, Celeste began her journey. The Butler and Ciel are confused by her strange behavior and way of speaking and even more confused by her lack of willingness to talk about herself to them.
