After that rocket exploded before take-off, some people came down with a condition called E7 sickness while others developed powers correlating to their personalities. 
Arie has powers, but her brother is sick and has been since the accident; however, scientists have a theory that the cure for E7 may be found in comet debris hundreds of thousands of miles outside earth. Arie may not go to school or have much experience with science or space, but that won't hold her back from applying for a mission towards that cure anyways.

"Whatever it takes."
