The Island of Magmar is one dark forest. Its people are divided into guilds. They know every tree and herb and they know how to survive in a time of enchantment and powerful magic. Until an ambitious and malevolent force conjures a demon: a demon so evil that it can be contained only in the body of a ferocious phoenix that will slay everything it sees, a demon determined to destroy the world. Only one boy can stop it - 12-year-old Bennu, who has seen his mother murdered by the phoenix. With her dying breath, Bennu's mother tells her son of his burden. He must lead the phoenix to the mountain of the Guardian Spirit and beg that spirit's help to overcome it. A terrifying quest in a world of Kitsune, tree spirits and Faceless People, a world in which trusting a friend means risking your life.

What happens when the mundane world you despise suddenly shatters around you? Kitsuka hates his predictable college life, the fake smiles, meaningless friendships, and endless routine. But when mysterious fighters tear through his classroom ceiling and a faceless entity drags him into another world, his boring existence becomes the least of his problems. Waking up in a strange realm with impossible skies and deadly creatures, Kitsuka discovers something has changed within him. When he should have died, he didn't. When he should have been weak, he wasn't. As his friends lie unconscious in a cave, Kitsuka faces a choice that will define who he becomes in this new world: cling to his past self, or embrace the darkness that whispers of power and freedom. Sometimes the monster you become is exactly what you needed to be. A dark psychological fantasy about transformation, isolation, and the price of power.
