After dealing with the death of their mother, life becomes rough for 14-year-old Deborah Hill and her family. As summer begins, their father is sent on a business trip while Deborah and her little sister Olivia spend two months with their aunt, Susan Hill, whom they've never met before. Despite their aunt's friendliness, the girls feel out of place in the small town of Emercaster.

Things soon let up when Deborah soon befriends an amicable yet eccentric girl at an art club. Olivia seemingly finds a friend as well, though Deborah assumes her sister's new playmate is an imaginary friend made to help her cope.
