"Ben first found me on the edge of April. I was peering out across the saltwater marsh, wearing my mother's jeans and clutching a funerary urn." *** In 2008, after the collapse of the American economy and a subsequent super-flu epidemic, 20 year old Annabeth Kidd is alone as the country crumbles. After she drives north from Portland, Maine, she breaks down on Route 182 and meets Ben, a young man raised by a paranoid, Doom's Day prepper father to anticipate a post-apocalyptic event of this nature. The two of them find an abandoned trailer park called Silver Gardens outside of Bar Harbor and settle there. Their intimate dependence on one another, originally a desperate need for human companionship, blossoms into something deeper than they can name. A myriad of diverse characters are drawn to the haven of Silver Gardens Park. They are just everyday folk wanting to survive the lean years following upheaval and build a foundation for the next generation. Ben and Annabeth become determined to give them that, hoping for a future that they may never see themselves. A story about the first months after the downfall of modern society and the survival of love despite the destruction.
