Thomas, a young Canadian soldier in World War II, is travelling back to his home in Saskatchewan. As a nurse tends to his wounds aboard the boat, he reflects upon his experiences in Hong Kong, and grieves his dead friend, Theo. Questioning how he will ever be able to get over the horrors, Thomas discovers that the nurse understands where he is coming come. It appears that she herself is grieving Theo as much as he is.
