They sent me out from Santa Fe to try and find his trail
They think that I'm the only one who can bring him back to jail
This star says I'm a lawman this gun has seen me through
And though my heart is heavy I've got a job to do
You see he's such a proud man who never learned to crawl
But a good man turns gun slinger he's the meanest man of all
He killed the US Marshall and for that he's gonna pay
And I'm the lonely lawman who's on his trail today
There was a time he fought for true and on the side of right
Until the only girl he loved was killed one faithful night
I know his heart was shattered as he turned the barren sod
And laid away her body come ending into God
Then he vowed a revenge to those who took her life
And every notch upon his gun a tear shed for his wife
But revenge is like wild fire sweepin' through the wood
It turns reason into ashes and it burns out on the good

This isn't the story of how the city girl fell for the cowboy, oh no, this story was how the city boy fell for the home grown country girl. Harper was a single mother with a six year old son as her pride and joy. She owned her fathers old ranch as his last wish and lived an almost normal life. She had proven that she didn't need a man in her life after what had happened with her ex husband, but no matter what she did she couldn't seem to get away from his mistakes. She had known that he had had another child with someone else, but she had been unprepared for when that child's mother passed and how her ex was now getting out of county jail. She knew it wasn't her child, but the sibling of her only love Lucas. She was going to adopt that child and make a real home for her. Only she didn't know what a fight that would be. Caleb was an attorney from the big city of Detroit. He had been assigned to a case that brought him down to the sunny land of Georgia, with the heat and stetson hat fashion. Not knowing what all it would contain he was shocked to be faced with a fierce woman. Independent. A good head on her shoulders. Harper was all he could have ever wanted. He was struck with what he would have sworn to be lightning and wanted to know what made her tick under that gorgeously tanned skin. But they were from two different worlds. And he had a lot to learn if he was going to win over the country girl. Especially with him representing her ex-husband. Jessie, along with her six year old nephew, Davy, has always had a turbulent life. She and her sister, Holly, who was Davy's mother, are members of a well-known outlaw family in the year of 1872. Holly has acted as a mother to Jessie, growing up, as their mother died early in Jessie's life. Their father is one of the members of the Banks gang, though they haven't seen him in years. Also members of the gang are several cousins, an uncle, and various other non-related men. Holly became pregnant at an early age from one of the gang members, and Davy is her child. Holly tried to raise Jessie and also Davy away from the gang's influence. But the gang members will occasionally come to the small farm where they live and take supplies or take a rest from being pursued by law. Around a year and a half earlier, Holly met a man. Devlin Riley. Devlin is a Texas Ranger. He p and Holly fall in love and marry, and Holly has a baby, Owen. For the period of time that Devlin is a part of their lives, there is some stability for Holly and Jessie. He provides for them financially, and when the family gang of outlaws find out she is married to a lawman, they keep their distance for a while. Holly contacts influenza and dies. This story takes place after that, when baby Owen is about seven months old.
