In the middle of nowhere, the Crux family lives in complete isolation. Wanting nothing to do with the progressing world around them, they lived simply off of what they farm. The children are forbidden to leave the property out of fear that the world might poison they're minds. James is loyal to his parents and understand they're wishes. Eleanor, however, wishes to see the outside world. She wishes to leave behind her family and all of the horrific abuse that they unleash upon her.
