A drug gone wrong in 2026 has plagued the people of Earth, dividing them into 4 levels of insanity after killing billions. The largest group are the Insanes: people whose minds can't handle reality anymore, destroyed. The other three levels are Sanes, Selunas, and Half and Halves.
Now in 2047, the Bellatores is a new, mini-army of the USA; they're injecting the cure into those who have become insane from the drug. Seventeen-year-old Hartford Utane is one of these brave Bellatores men as well as the only Half and Half in their division; one of the 40 million who lie between being Sane or Insane. Guided by a troubling past, he and his friends fight to cure the worldwide pandemic of insanity, losing many but refusing to give up hope.
However, Hart is mentally unstable, even in his Sane state. With a new heartbreak, he begins to make rash decisions; and one of them results in his being captured.
