Roberto, Elza, Henrieta, José Maria e os demais habitantes do cortiço se vêem às voltas com acontecimentos estranhos que lhes furtava a paz, mas que se tornaram urgentes quando mortes acontecem.
Temerosos de serem despejados e expulsos pelo Império que vê com maus olhos os cortiços, resolvem fazer justiça com as próprias mãos, lançando a parteira Das Dores à fogueira para ser queimada viva, único método conhecido de aniquilar o poder das bruxas.
Mesmo após restarem apenas cinzas da bruxa, estranhas ocorrências voltam a assolar o cortiço.
Fica decidido que a fogueira permanecerá acessa indefinidamente, até que todas as bruxas sejam reduzidas às cinzas.
