Ruth has a secret: she is mentally unable to retain information she doesn't find striking or interesting, long term or short term. The second something's in front of her she knows it instinctively, like one knows their own name, acing all her exams effortlessly and answering questions with ease - however, she has no idea what she looks like until she sees herself in the mirror, knows little to nothing about pop culture, and often-times forgets her own address. In fear of what would happen if someone found out about her condition, Ruth goes through her life pretending to be normal: going as far as feigning delinquency and rarely attending classes as to not draw attention to herself or her apparent intelligence.
However, when in her senior year of high school, one of her classmates Abel finds out that she receives stellar grades without any obvious effort and wants in, blackmailing her into tutoring him so he can graduate with his class. The more time they spend together, the more they begin to become friends - and the closer Ruth gets to Abel, the closer Abel get's to the truth.
Soon enough, Ruth finds herself involved in a calculated game of chess with a boy who doesn't even know he's playing - and to her horror, he's winning.
