Colony Collapse is a short story based in the same universe as Hugh Howey's Half Way Home, and was written as an entry in the Hugh Howey Booktrack Fanfiction Contest. Jessa is technically 24 years old, but she was born just two weeks ago, a genetically engineered colonist living on the galaxy's distant and dangerous frontier. Trained as a Logic Engineer, she's responsible for maintaining computers across the colony, but the latest software bug may be more than it seems... and her efforts to fix it will determine the future of her entire world.

Kathleen had been imprisoned for years. She had no idea who they were or why she was there. Every day for years it had been the same thing. No talking or communicating with her captors after the first year she no longer tried. Getting beaten for making any noise at all. They didn't even speak within hearing distance of her. She was given a book and daily exercise but hadn't seen the sun or outside since she was put in her cell. Until that day when it all changed. Aliens existed and she was going somewhere with them, not sure as to where but at least she was out of her cell. She would not go back in one no matter how nice her new 'cage' seemed. Thinking of continuing this as another story with other humans and aliens. Like after Kathleen's abduction.
