When Ben Solo turns his back on the First Order, aiding the Resistance in a crucial battle taking place at least a year after the events of The Last Jedi, he is sentenced to be exiled, and with him, Rey, with whom he shares a powerful Force Bond. He is being condemned for the crimes he committed against the galaxy when he called himself Kylo Ren; Rey is going with him because she was the one to defend him in his trial. Together, they are sent to a remote forest/mountain planet for five years with minimal contact from friends/family at the end of each year.
