Decades ago, humans found the peaceful land of Vaerali where all dragon-human hybrid races had coexisted in peace and prosperity for many millennia. The humans saw the lush green plains and golden fields of wheat and sent their people in force across the seas to burn and conquer it in the name of their Emperor. Without any other motive than desire for what they don't have, they declared war on Vaerali and chaos erupted across the tranquil lands. Screaming sounded day and night as hybrids all across Vaerali were slaughtered; whole races going extinct in one night as the humans spread their ruin across the land, claiming it one town at a time. This dark time in Vaerali is known all across the world as the Dragon Slaughter; the night the dragon hybrid race was conquered.
Years pass and a tentative peace finally settles over the scarred lands of Vaerali as the humans shove the hybrids far into the shadow of their reign. They force any who resist their rule into enslavement or, if that doesn't prove to be enough to crush their spirit, they kill them and hang their wings as trophies - and a warning to all the others who disobey the reign. To this day, the humans still hold all of the power over Vaerali and, in turn, all of the dragon hybrids. But there are storm clouds on the horizon.
And from the rubble of a decimated civilization, a rebellion is growing.

In this world, Drakes were the epitome of power amongst the species. Only making up 10% of the population, humans making up the other 90%. Drakes could be found in the highest positions of power in communities or in positions to protect others (such as guards, watchmen, knights, patrolman). No one questioned this, dragons taking care of their own. A private species with traditions and rules that only dragons were privy to. Making sure none over-reached so that there would always be peace and harmony amongst the dragon territories and between humans. A symbiosis that all worked hard to maintain. Humans were born with vibrant and colorful hair throughout the world. The more rare the color, the more blessings, respect, luck and riches came to them. Fiery red, leafy green, aqua blue. Eyes that matched their brightest feature. Dressing in the same colors or even brighter shades to demonstrate their extravagance, their standing in society. They normally worked side by side with the higher ranking dragons, helping to keep harmony. All Kieren knew was that he would have to remain cloaked, face obscured at all times. The villagers said he was a defect, so they made him their servant. His skin too pale. Form too slight. Eyes not right. An ugly thing where he should be thankful they did not kill him right away. To be grateful for their pity and staying their hand. The worst, they would tell him, was about the coloring of his features; his hair and eyes. I grew up in a world where dragon riders were revered for not only their bravery and looks, but also for their intelligence. Children would spend days on end studying just in the hopes that they would get accepted to the Rider School, and those who did get accepted left their homes like kings, followed with respect and well wishes. It had been years since a dragon rider had been accepted in the Rider School from my town, which was understandable since we boasted a population of only 100 kids in the acceptable age range. Every year we were visited by the Counselor, the man who decided who would be accepted, and every year at that time our town lit up. Festivities lasted the Counselor's whole stay, with competitions to test children's intelligence, stamina, strength, and looks set up to look like games. Every year my brothers and I would be disappointed by our results, until my 15th year, when everything changed.... "I think it be for bed soon my children." "Oh come now father, please finish the story," a little boy with white hair begged. "Yes father please," a young girl with black hair begged as well. "Alright, but it be bed right after or your mother would have my head." They both giggled and waited for their father to continue the story. "Peace flowed over the world, he put in place, his own form of rule. Each country would be ruled by a single Rider and their clans. Each of the world had dragons and their riders ruling the country. That is how peace remained in this world but something came to destroy our peace." The children gasped making the father smile. "Now to bed you two go." "Ah but father." They both whined but he covered them with the blanket. "No buts, to bed. I'll see you both in the morning." He kissed their heads making them smile. "Goodnight father."
