What makes your heart grow lighter? Is it the sound of a child laughing? Is it the sense of achievement of your educational or professional goals? At this very moment, when you have let your guards down and are trying to draw in all the tranquility you possibly could, depression hits you with all its force. It engulfs you back in its arms, mocking you for trying to escape. Like a manipulative lover, it knows all your secrets, but is wicked enough to use them against you. It uses tricks like anxiety and angst to diminish your self-worth.
Fighting back with all your strength may not be an option. Ignoring it till it goes away will also not work. Savera is a woman of 28, who is precisely a second away from the depression clutching her back in its arms. This is her story. There are a lot of things you don't really think about until they happen to you. Take rape, for instance. I always thought, "That won't happen to me. I have a boyfriend. I trust him. He would never take advantage of me like that..." I couldn't have been more wrong. Love in this day and age is often confused for manipulation and abuse. The warning signs are here. The things we say will tell us everything that is wrong. You are worth more than what you think you are. It's not your fault. If they tell you otherwise, get out. Burn the bridge.
