What makes your heart grow lighter? Is it the sound of a child laughing? Is it the sense of achievement of your educational or professional goals? Is it the warm, tingling sensation you get after you have made love? Is it when you take a walk amongst the greens of the world? Whatever may stimulate it, carrying a light heart is one of the most elated experiences a human will ever have.
For a minute there, you don't feel like you owe the universe your existence. You don't have to prove and justify your being, you don't have to say and do the right thing. And you want this minute to stretch into hours, perhaps expand into your lifetime.
At this very moment, when you have let your guards down and are trying to draw in all the tranquility you possibly could, depression hits you with all its force. It engulfs you back in its arms, mocking you for trying to escape. Like a manipulative lover, it knows all your secrets, but is wicked enough to use them against you. It uses tricks like anxiety and angst to diminish your self-worth.
Fighting back with all your strength may not be an option. Ignoring it till it goes away will also not work. Savera is a woman of 28, who is precisely a second away from the depression clutching her back in its arms. This is her story. It may not be a happy story, turn away right now if you want your tranquility to embrace you a bit longer. Rest assured, depression will find a way to you one way or the other. Reading this may or may not help you, but it will tell you that you are not alone.
