Thorin has been protecting me since my parents died when I was just a wee bairn. I accepted him as my own father and I was proud to be called his daughter. I was raised with all the skills he would teach his own kin so when the time would come I would be able to protect myself.
When Kili and Fili brought me along to Bilbo's house I became part of the company of Thorin Oakenshield. Against my fathers wishes I continued my journey with them, mostly with Kili.
