Responding to the universal cry for affection, I went over and sat down next to him, placing my arm around his shoulders. As I sat there holding his hands in my other hand, trying to comfort him from unknown pains, I thought about what I just witnessed. It was now quite clear I had my arm around not one person, but two. And they did not like each other. Dave-y is a patient at the Thorndike Institute who had a commissurotomy separating the right and left hemispheres of his brain to treat his severe epilepsy. Each hemisphere develops its own personality, one named Dave, the other Davy. Mary is a new clinical psychology intern assigned to work with Dave- y. However, he has once again developed bad seizures causing the medical team to want to operate. Mary is convinced the surgery, which could be dangerous, is not necessary and works to save him. Then she discovers why he is having his seizures and it changes everything.
