Hundreds of years in the future, seventeen year old Amethyst, or Owl, is coping with a world void of polar ice caps. She lives on a water community floating on the Pacific Ocean and one day, Amethyst dreams to live on the portion of land that still exists. Having never seen land before, she longs for the day her wish of walking on land will reign true. But in order for that dream to come true, she must first be one of the chosen by the Head of Intellect. In order to become chosen, Amethyst must have a high enough score on the exam each person takes while they are sixteen. With her seventeenth birthday coming in only a couple days, Amethyst will soon know her results and, in turn, will discover if she will ever step foot on land.
