The surface was not what Sans thought it would be.

Lack of communication skills, communication in general, and social interaction had driven him into a depressed and anxious state of loneliness so deep that it'd take a gang of serial killers to help drag him out and fix his problems.

Literally, it took a gang of murderers called CreepyPasta just to set things right.
